3182's are very rare, and when they turn up on ebay, they usually need reconing because the foam surround rots. Bill can't make new ones, but can recone them with superior pleated surrounds like the 515's , except larger.
I have 3 and by time you get them used and reconed at GPA, you generally have ~$300 each invested. They are good as new at that point and a capable sub, with a very low Fs of 18Hz:
Model Number: 3182
Xmax (inch) 0.50
Re (ohms) 6.40
Vd (cu. in.) 88.40
Fs (Hz) 18.00
Vas (cu. ft.) 35.00
Ref (%) 1.10
Qts 0.40
Qms 1.81
Qes 0.51
Vid 0.30

Here's the last source of 3182's from ebay. This guy was getting them from old installations that were being replaced. He indicated that he was going to get a quantity over a period of time, so it may be worth following up.
>>
Here's the deal - this guy is getting blown (foam edge is deteriorated) 3182's from some installations and selling them somewhat reasonable. I have gotten 3 and GPA is rebuilding them now. Contact information - the guy is honest as far as I know:

I have experience with the McCauley 6174. This driver produces "enormous" cabinet pressures. Cross bracing and braces, screwed and glued to the panels are necessary otherwise performance will really suffer.
I'm quite familiar with the Altec line of gray enclosures. For all intents and purposes, they are just plywood "boxes" unsuitable for mega-18s.

The 6174 is an impressive unit spec-wise. The company doesn't list a price, so I imagine they think a great deal of it. They were a litle vague on enclosures - can it be used in a ported cab? The sealed version looks to be a good choice for adding under a 210 or 625/8. Also how much power is needed for realistic levels?

The McCauley 6174! Enormous power handling, kind of med efficiancy, gets down very low!
I have heard this woofer used in Bassmaxx folded horns, with 2000w of power per driver! Didnt impress me as I expected it would, what I mean by this is that it did get down low, but lacked the punch I like, but this is just me!
I recommend you get to try this woofer and see if IT IS what your looking for!

A while back I posted this:
In case anyone is looking:
I recently purchased a couple of JBL 2235's from Ron Gold at:
http://www.goldsound.net/
They arrived within just a couple of days and appeared to be as represented - new old stock.
Ron told me that he can get 2235s and 2245s, so if you want new ones, give him a shout. I was pleased with what I got and the service.
'Hope this is helpful!
I've had these 2235's operating in my 828 cabs for some months now, and have been very happy with them. So, if you're willing to fork out about $600@ for NOS 2245's give Ron Gold a call.

Above Dave H recommended Chris Knight as a reputable source of Altec equipment:

I've bought a number of items from Chris and have found him to be a first class dealer. Everything I've gotten from him has been of quite good quality and reasonably priced (Well, I did pay a bit too much for some 828 grilles - but that was _my_ fault - not Chris's! I guess I just got carried away!
Anyhow, I'd gladly buy from Chris at any time. Highly recommended!

Hello,
I am able to purchase some Altec 3184?s and wonder if anyone can comment on how they would compare to the Altec 3182 or JBL 2245.
I see the x-axis travel is less on the 3184 than the 3182.
Also, I?ve seen posts that GPA can recone 3182?s. Can they do 3184?s? Can they turn a 3184 into a 3182?
Regards,
Jack

FWIW, in addition to the 2240, the E-155 can be reconed into a 2245 (per JBLs 'what fits' list).

In response to Jack6428, GPA can recone 3182's to better than original as Bill designed a superior cloth accordian cone surround to the delicate foam of the originals which rots rather quickly. Most used ones have to be redone because of this. I had two rebuilt with the new cones and they are impressive.
GPA can build 3184's but not 3182's (as of last summer), apparently the motor structure is not the same and parts are gone for the 3182. The 3184 is closer to a 515G spec-wise, 24Hz for Fs rather than 18Hz for 3182. 3182 is the better choice for a sub.
